The third Monday of January is  here and it’s supposedly the most depressing day of the year. Termed ‘Blue Monday’, the concept was originally invented by psychologist Cliff Arnall and takes into account a number of factors like weather conditions, low motivational levels, financial situation and post-Christmas blues to calculate the dreaded day. 
Although January can be a miserable month due to aforementioned factors, there is no tangible evidence to support the ‘Blue Monday’ theory and it’s mostly associated with how we think and feel. Here are some intentional actions you can take to dispel the negative sentiments associated with January.
Reset your goals
If your new year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside, there’s no reason why you can’t start over. Instead of doubting and being riddled with guilt, reconnect with your vision and simplify your goals to manageable actions you can do every day to achieve it. Start small, improve gradually and along the way your willpower and motivation will increase making it easier to accomplish your goals.
Get active
Numerous studies have shown that regular exercise can raise the levels of serotonin and dopamine in your brain which plays an important role in regulating overall mood and sense of well-being. Pick a mix of activities you enjoy like running, swimming or gardening and carve out at least 15-20 minutes daily for them. Even a short walk in the park and spending time in green spaces can help lift up your low mood.
Spend time with friends and family
Spending quality time with friends and family shouldn’t just be scheduled for the holiday season. Make an effort to meet up with your loved ones by organising fun days out or having heart-to-heart chats in the comfort of your home. Talking to people who care about you can really help you feel better.
Book a holiday in the sun
Why not plan a getaway? The excitement of a future trip to an exotic island paradise can do wonders for your mental state. Decreased sun exposure can also cause a drop in your serotonin levels so it’s all the more reason to trade dark nights and bleak weather for blue skies and warm temperature.
